I help you press the red button to launch your career.
When I pressed the red button. After completing a university degree in Political Science, I joined the Royal Canadian Navy as a Maritime Officer. Over the span of 14 years I sailed all over the world and managed to visit almost every continent on this earth. I got to drive warships, lead a ship’s dive team, jump out of helicopters, hunt submarines, fire torpedoes, and patrol the Lebanese-Israeli border as a peacekeeper with the UN… (and by the way, pressing that red button and yelling “FIRE!” is as fun as you think it would be!) During that time, I’ve experienced the good, the bad, and the ugly of leadership, team work, and communication in a high stress, high stakes, male-dominated environment… and learned a LOT from all of it.
Now I help you press the red button. I am now an executive coach and consultant. Specifically, I help women leaders in male-dominated fields who are overwhelmed and undervalued become indomitable leaders who inspire their teams to accomplish great things, AND get the promotion they deserve… all while rocking a perfect shade of lip gloss. In other words, I help those women to become highly effective AND recognized for the contributions they make, while not feeling like they have to “blend in” with their male colleagues.
Why I help you press the red button. How the heck did I get to this specialty? I’ve been there, and it sucks. I’ll let you in on a little secret: I have had what was supposed to be one of the coolest jobs in the world, and yet I hated it for at least half of my career. What was the difference between when I loved or hated my job? It was the degree to which I felt it was safe to just be me. When I was under leadership that rewarded me for being lewd, aloof, and aggressive/callous with my subordinates, i.e. “one of the guys,” I was miserable. When I was in an environment in which I felt safe to be myself, things flowed smoothly. I believe that it’s simple, although not necessarily easy, to make the workplace fun, engaging, challenging, and supportive: somewhere that people can feel free to be themselves and therefore free to be and do their best. I’m passionate about helping leaders create such an environment.
How I help you press the red button… differently. While many other coaches have a theoretical knowledge of leadership, team development and workplace communication, I’ve lived it. I have been an effective leader in some of the most challenging circumstances starting at a very young age. I’ve been a woman in a very male-dominated and traditionally masculine field, and have been highly successful. There have been times when I have been the only woman officer on board, or the only woman on a mission; I’ve had to figure out how to use my differences to my advantage to get the job done.
I am not one of those coaches who will ask you what you want to talk about, ask you questions about your feelings for an hour, and then walk away, (although fair warning: there will be some questions about feelings!). When appropriate, I will use my experience and my extensive training to help you achieve your loftiest goals with confidence and grace. I also provide team-building workshops to help your team press the red button. If any of this sounds interesting, go ahead and fill out the form to book a complimentary discovery call or contact me for more information.
